Welcome to Friday, the 21st day of October in this Year of our Lord Two Thousand and Sixteen. Praise god herself. And welcome to wyd? — your melanated after-dark digest.
#WeBuiltThis for the culture, and we’ll be sliding into your DMs three nights a week with All Black Everything™. It’ll look like this…
WHAT HAD HAPPENED WAS
Guess what? Black women owe you NOTHING! Amber J. Phillips of Advocates for Youth and BLACK took Roland Martin to task last week for scapegoating Black women as the reason for Birth of a Nation’s dismal performance at the box office.
Petty just got real: Bridget Todd of Medium told us how petty Black feminists control the media. Cuz we about that life.
65-year-old Black woman Deborah Danner was murdered by Bronx police on Tuesday for brandishing scissors and a baseball bat. She needed help — she suffered from schizophrenia — but instead she got two bullets. In 2012, Danner wrote about living with mental illness and remarked, “I smile rarely, but I am surviving.” Her essay was published this week. #SayHerName.
WHAT’S REALLY GOING ON?
Y’all know her best from Twitter, where she destroys respectability politics and celebrates Blackness in all its complexities. Peep our interview with Cherrell Brown on the #WeBuiltThis blog!
Samantha Master of BYP100’s DC chapter points out one glaring omission from Ava Duvernay’s epic Netflix documentary 13th: Black women’s stories.
ColorOfChange is doing the damn thing! They’ve been holding text-a-thons to engage thousands of Black voters and volunteers in battleground states for the past two months, and just finished commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Black Panther Party with an awesome tribute series.
BLACKITY BLACK: EXCELLENCE, JOY and MAGIC
You can’t outdo Black people. These young ballerinas show us how they #JuJuOnDatBeat, and it is glorious.
Vic Mensa tells us why he votes, and it may be the most powerful thing you watch this month.
#FBF to that time y’all swag surfed on the White House lawn.
We’ll get at you again soon.
